Hornets fall to Husson on Senior Day

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's lacrosse team dropped a 21-8 North Atlantic Conference decision to Husson University on Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles improve to 3-3 on the season and 3-1 in conference play, while the Hornets conclude their campaign winless in four NAC contests and five overall starts.

Husson opened the scoring with a pair of quick goals just over ten minutes into the game.  First Jaden Wells tallied.  Then Gunner McAllister followed with a man-up goal with an assist from Matthew Boynton.  Late in the quarter, Danny Carter picked up an unassisted goal, then Wells tallied again to give the visitors a 4-0 lead after one quarter.

Husson continued to extend their advantage in the early moments of the second quarter.  Carter scored just 33 seconds in to make it 5-0.  Then, with just over four minutes gone in the quarter, Darryn Bailey found the goal.  Back to back goals from Wells extended the lead further, before Taner Onor (East Montpelier, VT) got the Hornets on the scoreboard with 6:55 to go in the half.

Lyndon's Justin Servidori (Yarmouth, MA) scored a man-up goal with 5:14 to go in the quarter, but Roman Dennis responded for Husson, scoring less than a minute later.  The Hornets were able to pick up two more goals in the late stages of the quarter.  First, Anthony Townsend (Pembroke, MA) found Benjamin Cheever (Johnson, VT) for a score at the 3:35 mark.  Then Townsend's unassisted goal cut the Husson advantage to 9-4 at the half.

Wells opened the scoring with a man-down goal just seconds into the third quarter, but Onor responded just seconds later with a man-up score for the Hornets.  Wells then scored two more goals in quick succession to make it 12-5, Eagles with 13:13 remaining in the quarter.

Husson's Robert Sturdevant found McAllister for his second goal of the game at the 5:32 mark of the third quarter.  Cheever then broke the Husson run when he scored off an assist from Townsend.  Two tallies from McAllister sandwiched around a Wells goal on a McAllister assist in the final 2:16 of the quarter sent the Eagles into the final quarter with a 16-6 advantage.

The Hornets struck first in the final quarter when Cheever scored with an assist from Rob Sacucci (Fairfield, CT) 2:32 into the period.  After Husson won the faceoff, Hornet goalie Aaron Florence (Lutz, FL) came up with a ground ball and cleared it upfield to Onor, who caught it and scored.  That would be as close as the Hornets would get, however, as Husson ran off five goals in the final 5:38 to account for the final score.

Saturday's game was the final one for Hornet seniors Onor and Townsend.  They were honored, along with fellow senior Ken Niemann (AuSable Forks, NY), who was unable to play in the contest.
