Box Score Stowe, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's tennis team capped off its regular season with a 7-2 non-conference victory over Castleton University on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory the Hornets improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 0-7. The Hornets also clinched their first winning regular season since 2010.
Lyndon's first doubles team of Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, LA) and Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, VT) got the Hornets off to a good start with n 8-1 win over the Castleton duo of Rowan Kidder and Luke Cohen. However Castleton evened things when their #2 team of Connor Davis and Jason Lipscomb edged the Hornet pairing of Quinlan Peer (Saranac Lake, NY) and Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY) 8-7(7-4) in the tightest match of the day.
The Hornets completed doubles play with a 2-1 lead in the match when the third doubles pairing of Garrick Webster (Terryville, CT) and Ken Niemann (AuSable Forks, NY) defeated the Castleton team of Rafael Robles and Alijah Seymour 8-2.
Wickstrom opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Kidder at #1. Falkenburg followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Cohen at fourth singles. Mulligan then clinched the match for the Hornets with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Davis at second singles.
With the match decided, Peer and Webster picked up pro set wins over Seymour and Robles respectively. Lipscomb knocked off Niemann in straight sets in the third singles match for the day's final result.
Prior to the match the Hornets recognized Mulligan and Nieman, the team's two seniors who were competing in their final regular season match.
Lyndon was scheduled to host Norwich University on Thursday, but that match has been canceled due to expected wintry weather. The Hornets now wait to learn whether they will compete in the North Atlantic Conference East Division Championship on May 2nd. The top two teams earn spots in the championship match.
The Hornets currently trail division leading SUNY Delhi by one-half game and lead third place Thomas College by one-half game. Delhi and Thomas are scheduled to play on Saturday. If Delhi wins that match, the Hornets will clinch the #2 seed and play the Broncos for the division championship. If Thomas wins, the Hornets, Broncos, and Terriers will finish in a three-way tie, which will be broken according to NAC tiebreaking procedures.
