Box Score Castleton, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's tennis team defeated Castleton Universty for the first time since 2005 on Saturday. The Hornets' 6-3 non-conference win is also Lyndon's first since the program returned to NCAA Division III competition in 2008. Lyndon improves to 2-2 on the season while Castleton falls to 0-4.
With the Hornets playing shorthanded the host Spartans took a 2-0 lead with forfeit wins in sixth singles and third doubles. The Lyndon first doubles team of Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, VT) and Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, LA) opened things with an 8-0 victory over Castleton's Rowan Kidder and Luke Cohen. However the Spartan #2 team of Connor Davis and Jason Lipscomb picked up an 8-4 win over Lyndon's Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY) and Quinlan Peer (Saranac Lake, NY) to give Castleton a 3-1 lead following doubles play.
With Lyndon needing to take at least four of the five singles matches, the Hornets rose to the occasion with a clean sweep. Wickstrom, Falkenburg, and Garrick Webster (Terryville, CT) picked up straight set wins at first, third, and fifth singles respectively. Mulligan came from behind to defeat Davis, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, at second singles. And in the tightest match of the day, Peer picked up a 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 1-0 (10-1) win over Cohen at fourth singles.
