Box Score New Hampton, NH - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's lacrosse team opened the 2020 campaign with a non-conference matchup against Salem State University in a game played at New Hampton School. The Hornets were unable to generate much in the way of offense, and came up on the short end of a 16-0 final score. Salem State improves to 2-1 on the season.
Salem State scored three times in the opening quarter and never looked back. Kevin Albert, Preston Dougherty, and Drew Worthley scored three goals each to pace the Vikings. Albert added five assists and three ground balls while Dougherty recorded a pair of assists and two ground balls. Zach Perrson chipped in a pair of goals and a game high six ground balls and Nick Quick also found the net twice.
The Hornets were only able to put three shots on goal, two by Taner Onor (East Montpelier, VT) and one by Chris Andes (Lusby, MD). Onor recorded a team best five ground balls while Gino Bonaventura (Peabody, MA) notched four ground balls and caused three Viking turnovers.
Jack Gantner and Jonathan Crutchfield combined for the shutout in goal, with Gantner earning the win. Crutchfield made three saves. Aaron Florence (Mandeville, LA) made 14 saves in goal for the Hornets and was tagged with the loss.
The Hornets will return to action on Wednesday when they travel back to New Hampton to take on Rivier University. Start time is tentatively set for 3:30 pm.
