Box Score Stowe, VT - Northern Vermont Univeristy-Lyndon won all nine matches in defeating NVU-Johnson in Thursday's non-conference men's tennis matchup at the Topnotch Resort. With the win the Hornets even their record at 1-1 on the season. The Badgers remain winless in three starts.
The Hornets jumped out to a quick lead by winning all three doubles contests. Lyndon's number one team of Patrick Wickstrom (LaFayette, LA) and Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, VT) defeated the Johnson team of Dylan Griffin and David Cosman, 8-2. Kyle Leighton (Burrillville, RI) and Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY) downed Patrick Bell and Kyle Robbins, 8-5, at second doubles and Garrick Webster (Terryville, CT) and Ken Niemann (AuSable Forks, NY) beat Luke BuglionGluck and Tyler Ivone, 8-3, at third doubles.
The Hornets also dominated singles play. Wickstrom defeated Griffin at first singles withoug dopping a game, 6-0, 6-0. Falkenburg nearly matched that at number five, defeating BuglionGluck 6-1, 6-0. Webster picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ivone at sixth singles and Mulligan was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Cosman at second singles.
Third and fourth singles were the most competitive matches of the day. Niemann defeated Robbins in two hard fought sets, 7-5, 6-3 at fourth singles. In the match of the day, the third singles contest, Leighton took the first set, 6-3, before Bell evened gthe match with a 6-2 win in the second set. Leighton was then able to pull out the match and complete the sweep with a 10-8 tiebreaker win.
Thursday's match was a part of the NVU President's Cup Challenge, the annual competition for athletic superiority between the two NVU campuses.
The Hornets' next scheduled match is a non-conference affair at the University of Southern Maine on Thursday, April 9th. All matches prior to that date have been postponed as a precautionary measure as part of NVU's response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
