Hornet men use long ball to hold off SUNY Canton

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon rode their three-point shooting to a 92-90 North Atlantic Conference men's basketball victory over SUNY Canton on Friday evening.  With the win the Hornets improve to 6-17 on the season and keep their NAC playoff hopes alive in raising their conference mark to 3-9.  The Roos fall to 14-10 overall and 10-3 in conference.

The game was a back and forth affair from the onset.  Kyle Cary (Selkirk, NY) connected twice from three-point range to give the Hornets an early 6-4 advantage.  Canton responded by scoring the next eight points, with four coming from Joseph Werner, to grab a 12-6 advantage.  Three Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY) free throws and a three-pointer from Timothy Hoar (Shelburne Falls, MA) tied things, but a 10-2 Canton run capped by a Brandon Blaker jumper put the Roos back in front, 22-14, with 12:34 to go in the opening half.

This time it was the Hornets' time to go on a run.  A Cary jumper followed by back to back Hoar threes tied things, then Luke Fredsell (Whitesboro, NY) connected from distance to put Lyndon in front 25-22.  A Fredsell jumper made it 30-26 at the 6:25 mark, but Canton went on a 13-0 run over the next 2:34 to take a 39-30 lead.  Hoar broke the run with a three-pointer, then Damon Denteh (Jamaica, NY) connected on a pair of free throws and a three of his own to bring the Hornets back within one.  Quran DuBois then made two free throws for Canton, but Denteh connected again from long range to tie the game at 41-41.  Canton's George Nehma made one of two free thros to put the Roos back in front, but a Peyton Olsen (Middleburgh, NY) three put the Hornets back on top.  Nehma's layup 13 seconds before the horn sent the teams into intermission tied at 44-44.

Hoar opened the second half scoring with another three to put Lyndon in front.  The Hornets maintained a slim advantage over the next several minutes, eventually going up by seven at 59-52 following a Denteh three at the 13:41 mark.  Canton responded with a run of their own, and when Blaker scored and converted a free throw, the game was tied at 59-59.  Canton's Andrew Fitch made one of two free throws to put the Roos in front.  After Fredsell and Juztin Chambers-Phillips traded baskets, two Denteh threes sandwiched around one from Fredsell gave the Hornets a 70-62 advantage with 8:56 to go.

A Nehma jumper stopped the Hornet run, but Hoar answered with a three to give Lyndon its biggest lead at 73-64.  DuBois then connected on a three and followed with a basket and free throw.  A Werner free throw made it a two-point game, but the Hornets went on an 8-2 run capped by a Fredsell three to build their lead back to eight points at the 5:29 mark.

Lyndon still led by eight follwoing a Cary basket and free throw at the 2:34 mark, but jumpers from Werner and Danny Santana made it 88-84 with 1:25 to go.  After a Hornet turnover, Nehma was fouled.  He missed both free throws, but Warner grabbed the rebound and scored to make it 88-86 with 57 seconds remaining.  The Hornets failed to score on their next possession, but got a defensive stop and Hoar was fouled securing the rebound.    He made both free throws to make it a four point game.  Werner was then fouled on the rebound with seven seconds left.  He made one of two, but Falkenburg got the rebound and was fouled.  He converted both shots to make it 92-87, and a Werner three at the buzzer accounted for the final score.

Hoar led the Hornets with a career best double double of 23 points and 15 rebounds.  Denteh added 22 points while Fredsell and Cary chipped in with 19 and 17 points respectively.  Falkenburg finished with eight points and dished out a team best seven assists.

DuBois paced the Roos with 22 points and eight rebounds.  Werner notched a double double with 21 points and 14 rebounds.  Nehma finished with 16 points and Santana and Blaker added 11 points apiece.

Lyndon was 29/59 (49.2%) from the floor, including 20/40 (50.0%) from beyond the three-point arc.  Canton was 36/73 (49.3%) but only 5/20 (25.0%) from distance.  The Roos owned a 41-33 rebounding advantage and committed 12 turnovers compared to 18 for the Hornets.

The same two teams will square off again on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.  Prior to the contest Lyndon will honor its three seniors - Denteh, Hoar, and injured Jahleel Gabriel (Springfield, MA).
