Box Score Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's basketball team raced to a 51-19 halftime lead on the way to an 84-42 North Atlantic Conference victory over SUNY Canton on Friday evening. With the win the Hornets improve to 8-14 on the season and 4-8 in NAC play. Lyndon also clinches their third consecutive berth in the NAC playoffs. Canton falls to 1-23 on the season and 1-12 in conference play.
After Canton's Jeanna Manning connected on a three-point goal to give the Roos an early 3-2 advantage, Lyndon outscored Canton 17-3 over the next six minutes and never looked back. Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH) had two three-pointers and eight points total to ignite the run. The Hornets led 19-8 after one quarter and extended their lead to 51-19 by halftime. Poirier had 17 points in the opening half to lead the Lyndon attack.
The Hornets continued to pull away after intermission, building the lead to 66-27 after three quarters, and doubling up the Roos at the final horn. The 84 points scored are the most by a Hornet team since an 89-83 double overtime win over Husson University in January of 2018.
Poireir finished with a career high 23 points to lead all scorers. She was 8/13 from the floor, including 7/12 from behind the three-point arc. Alisha Celley (Cabot, VT) and Lauren Young ( Concord, VT) also reached double figures, finishing with 14 and 12 points respectively. Alissa Mitchell (Milton, NH) filled the stat sheet with nine points, nine rebounds, six steals, and five assists. Lea Crompton (Dunbarton, NH) dished out a game high eight assists.
Autumn Watkins led Canton with 15 points and six rebounds. Manning chipped in 12 points and foour assists.
The Hornets dominated every statistical category. Lyndon was 35/69 (50.7%) from the floor, including 9/30 (30.0%) from the arc, while Canton was only 17/60 (28.3%) and 4/18 (22.2%) from distance. The Hornets owned a 46-36 rebounding advantage. Lyndon also forced 25 Canton turnovers while committing only 14 themselves.
The same two teams will tip off again tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm. Prior to the game the Hornets will celebrate Senior Day and honor their three seniors, Celley, Mitchell, and Rylee Moore (Livermore, ME).
