SUNY Delhi pulls away from Hornet men in the second half

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon climbed to within one point of SUNY Delhi just over four minutes into the second half of Tuesday's non-conference men's basketball game.  The visiting Broncos responded with a quick 15-3 run to create some separation and pulled away for a 108-92 victory.  With the win the Broncos improve to 10-6 on the season, while the Hornets fall to 4-8 with the loss.

The opening half was closely contested thoughout.  Delhi was able to open up an eight point advantage at 22-14 at the 13:25 mark following a Justin Daoud layup off of a Hornet turnover.  Lyndon was able to climb back in it, however, and when Bryan Thompson (New Britain, CT) made one of two free throws things were knotted up at 33-33.  Peyton Olsen (Middleburgh, NY) then connected on a long three to give Lyndon their first lead since 12-8.  Delhi scored the next five points to regain the lead, but Damon Denteh (Jamaica, NY) found Kenan Hahjdarevic (St. Johnsbury, VT) for a layup inside to tie things at 38-38.  Delhi would score the next seven points on a basket and foul shot from Glenn Butler and four Daoud free throws, and eventually take a 56-48 advantage into intermission.

After Therneus Mavenson's putback basket on the first possession of the second half gave the Broncos a double digit lead, Lyndon went on a 13-4 run capped by a Denteh three-pointer to pull within 62-61 with 16:11 to go.  After Delhi's Jordan Fragale and Lyndon's Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY) traded baskets, the Broncos went on what would turn out to be a decisive 8-0 run.  Fragale started things by getting to the rim and scoring, then Carlos Ithier came up with a steal and found Daoud for a layup.  Jumpers from Fragale and Daound made it 72-63 Delhi with 13:24 to go.

The Hornets' Dylan Torello (Port St. Lucie, FL) connected from three-point range to momentarily stop the run, but Payton Dean scored on a putback, then Ithier knocked down a three and  a three and Fragale converted a pair of free throws to build the lead to 13 with 11:44 to go.  The Broncos would gradually extend their advantage to 22 points late before coming away with the 16-point win.

Fragale topped six double figure scorers for the Broncos, finishing with 26 points and adding six assists.  Daoud added 18 points and Dean posted a double double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.  Mavenson Therneus also posted a double double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Falkenburg led the Hornets with a game high 29 points, going 10/12 from the floor including 6/7 from behind the three-point line.  Denteh added 13 points.  Kyle Cary (Selkirk, NY) and Olsen also hit double figures, finishing with 11 and ten points respectively.

Both teams shot the ball well.  Delhi made 43 of 83 shots (51.8%) while Lyndon converted on 34 of their 65 attempts (52.3%) including 15 of 34 (44.1%) from behind the arc.  The Hornets shared the ball well, finishing with 27 assists on their 34 field goals.  Delhi dominated on the glass, outrebounding Lyndon 51-33.

The Hornets will return to North Atlantic Conference play on Friday evening when they host NAC leading University of Maine at Farmington.  Tip-off in Stannard Gymnasium is set for 7:30 pm.
