Box Score Lyndonville, VT - With Saturday's North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game tied midway through the third quarter, Northern Vermont University-Lyndon went on a quick 8-0 run, then held off NVU-Johnson the rest of the game to earn a 68-58 victory. The win was the first in seven conference starts for Lyndon and improved the Hornets' overall record to 5-11. Johnson remains winless in 16 games this season, including seven in NAC play.
Lyndon started fast, capitalizing on four early Johnson turnovers to take a 10-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest. The Badgers responded with a 14-0 run ov their own, and when Lindsey Laperle converted a layup, Johnson had a 14-10 advantage. Alissa Mitchell (Milton, NH) connected on a three-pointer to stop the Johnson run, then a Lea Crompton (Dunbarton, NH) free throw and Mitchell's layup following a Rylee Moore (Livermore, ME) steal gave the Hornets a 16-14 lead after one quarter.
The second quarter was a back and forth affair, with neither team able to grab a lead of more than three points. Shaylan Mosher's (Newark, VT) jump shot right before the halftime buzzer sent Lyndon into the break with a 30-27 avantage.
Johnson's Kiana Johnson knocked down a jump shot on the first posession of the second half, then Amorette Rodriguez converted the first of two free throws to knot the game at 30-30. Crompton's jumper put the Hornets back in front. Mitchell and Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH) then converted two Johnson turnovers into points and Crompton found Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) for a layup to give Lyndon a 38-30 lead. Johnson would get no closer than six points the rest of the way, as Lyndon cruised to the victory.
Crompton led Lyndon with a game high 16 points and handed out four assists. Mitchell added 15 points while grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out four assists. Mosher also reached double figures with 14 points and grabbed a team high seven rebounds. Kiana Johnson led the Badgers with 13 points and Ellery Kiefer notched a double double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Lyndon was able to counter Johnson's 46-38 rebounding advantage by forcing 24 Badger turnovers while only committing eight themselves. Lyndon was 28/70 (40.0%) from the floor while Johnson went 19/55 (34.5%).
The Hornets will return to the court on Tuesday evening when they travel to Plymouth State University for the final non-conference game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30.
