Box Score Farmington, ME - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's basketball team played North Atlantic Conference leading University of Maine at Farmington on nearly even terms for a half on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunatley for the Hornets, they were unable to sustain things in the second half, as UMF scored the first 13 points of the second half and cruised to a 109-77 victory. The Beavers improve to 13-3 overall and sit alone atop the NAC standings at 6-0. The Hornets fall to 4-12 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.
The host Beavers maintained a small lead throughout most of the opening half, but they were unable to shake the Hornets. Back to back baskets from Bill Ruby extended the UMF advantage to 35-20 with 7:45 remaining in the half, but Lyndon responded with a run of their own and pulled within 47-46 with just over a minute until half after Damon Denteh (Jamiaca, NY) connected on a long range three and Peyton Olsen (Middleburgh, NY) made one of two free throws. A Ruby basket and a Riley Robinson putback gave Farmington a 51-46 lead at the break. It marked the first time in their six NAC contests that a UMF opponent was within less than 15 points.
The Beavers' Isaac Witham opened the second half scoring with a transition three-pointer and followed with a layup to ignite a 13-0 UMF run coming out of the break. UMF continued to extend the lead from there, as the Hornets were unable to answer.
Ruby topped four double figure scorers for the Beavers, finishing with 24 points and a team best nine rebounds. Robinson added 23 points and Terion Moss posted a double double with 15 points and ten assists. Witham chipped in 14 points. Kyle Cary (Selkirk, NY) led the Hornets with a double double of 18 points and ten rebounds. Denteh and Olsen added 14 and 13 points respectively.
The Hornets will return home next Saturday when they host NVU-Johnson in a NAC and NVU President's Cup matchup. The game will also be a part of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Suits and Sneakers Week, a nationwide initiative of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society in which basketball coaches at all levels unite in the fight against cancer.
