Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's tennis team hosted Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Senior Day Sunday.  With the #3 seed in next weekend's North Atlantic Conference Tournament on the line, the visiting Trailblazers came away with a 7-2 win to improve to 5-4 on the season and 4-2 in the NAC.  The Hornets conclude the regular season at 3-8 overalll and 2-4 in conference.

MCLA jumped in front by taking two of three doubles contests.  The Trailblazers' Briana Higgins and Mackenna Jordan posted an 8-1 win over Lyndon's Emilie Dube (Bristol, CT) and Savannah Jackson (Barre, VT) at #1 doubles and Jessica DuPont  and Alyssa Keegan swept Faibe Achinda (Hinesburg, VT) and Erica Hayakawa 8-0 at #2 doubles.  The Hornet duo of Oo Mai Be (Winooski, VT) and Susmita Mangar (Winooski, VT) earned a point with a hard fought 8-6 win over MCLA's McKenna Clark and Samantha Schwantner at #3 doubles.

Mangar picked up Lyndon's only point in singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ashlee Bartels at #6 singles.  First and second singles were both tightly contested, with DuPont defeating Dube in two close sets, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, at #1 and Higgins besting Jackson 6-3, 7-6 (6-4) at #2.  Jordan, Clark, and Keegan picked up straight set wins over Hayakawa, Ro Ze Yar (Winooski, VT), and Be at thrid, fourth, and fifth singles respectively to account for the final margin.

Sunday's match was the final home contest for Achinda, Be, Hayakawa, Jackson, Mangar, and Yar.  Before the match they were recognized for their contributions to Hornet tennis.

Despite the loss, the Hornets qualified for next Saturday's NAC Tournament by virtue of NVU-Johnson's win over SUNY Delhi this morning.  Lyndon will enter the tournament as the #4 seed and will face top seeded Husson University in one semi-final.  MCLA clinched the #3 seed with today's win and will take on #2 Lesley University in the other semi-final.  The two semi-final winners will square off at 3:30 pm next Saturday for the NAC Championship.  Semi-final match times will be announced on Monday.  The tournament will be hosted by the Woburn Racquet Club in Woburn, MA.
