Box Score Essex Junction, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's tennis season came to an end in the North Atlantic Conference East semi-finals on Saturday morning. The Hornets, the tournament's #4 seed, fell to top seeded Thomas College, 5-0, at The Edge Sports & Fitness.
Thomas jumped in front by capturing all three doubles matches. At #1, the Terrier team of Ryan Chasse and Kaleb Payson defeated the Hornets' Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, LA) and Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, VT) 8-3. Jared Waterhouse and Yontz Sutton of Thomas posted an 8-0 win over Mukhtar Sheikh Abdullahi (Mogadishu, Somalia) and Kyle Leighton (Burrillville, RI) at #2 doubles. Christo Naranja and Jose Alfonso completed the doubled sweep with a, 8-2 win over Zach Falkenburg (Kirkville, NY) and Abukar Hassan (Kenya) at #3 doubles.
The match then continued with singles play. All tournament matches are played to decision, so when Thomas picked up wins at #1 and #5 singles the Terriers secured the win. Chasse recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win over Wickstrom at ffirst singles and Naranja downed Falkenburg 6-3, 6-0 at fifth singles.
Mulligan capped his season by being named to the All-Tournament Team. In addition to pairing with Wickstrom at first doubles, he competed against Payson at second singles. After dropping the first set, Mulligan rebounded and held a 5-4 lead in the second set when Thomas clinched the match.
The Terriers move to the NAC East finals, where they face the winner of the second semi-final between #2 seed Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and #3 SUNY Delhi.
