Hornet men go on the road and defeat Maine Maritime

Castine, ME - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's lacrosse team came up with a 13-7 victory at Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon.  The Hornets improve to 3-8 overall and 2-3 in North Atlantic Conference play, whole the Mariners fall to 2-7 on the season and 2-3 in the NAC.

After Maine Maritime's Jayden Wilson scored the game's first goal, Lyndon ran off four straight goals of their own.  Spencer Aubin (Sharon, MA) got the Hornets on the board just over two minutes in, then took a pass from Callan Singer (St. Johnsbury, VT) and found the net again to put the Hornets in front.  Taner Onor (East Montpelier, VT) followed with an unassisted goal, then Singer scored wth an assist from Brandon Hunter (Glastonbury, CT) to make it 4-1, Hornets after one.

Wilson scored back to back goals to pull the Mariners within 4-3 just over two minutes into the second quarter.  Shea Jones (Hull, MA) answered with a man up goal of of an assist from Jet Magri (Lincolnville, ME) then took a feed from Aubin to score again, building the Hornet lead back to three.  Wilson then picked up his fourth goal of the half, and when Sawyer Watson added an unassisted goal with just three seconds to go in the half, the teams left the field with Lyndon leading 6-5.

Lyndon took command in the third quarter.  Onor scored off of an assist from Anthony Townsend (Pembroke, MA), then Magri, Aubin, and Singer each added goals, making it 10-5 Hornets at the 9:45 mark of the quarter.  A man up goal from Wilson memtarily broke the Lyndon run, but Aubin found Jones , who converted to put the Hornets in front 11-6 after three.

Jones found Aubin for a man up goal 31 seconds into the final quarter, then the Hornet defense limited Maine Maritime to only another Wilson goal the rest of the way.  Jones tacked on one more score in the final seconds, accounting for the final score.

The Hornets and Mariners were dead even on shots, 29-29, and turnovers, 26-26.  Maine Maritime held a slim 32-31 advantage in ground balls and a 15-8 margin at the faceoff X.

Hornet goalie Aaron Florence (Mandeville, LA) made nine saves on 16 shots on goal to pick up the win.  Mariner starting goalie Matthew Emery took the loss, yielding 12 goals on 20 shots on goal before giving way to Verne Rice for the final 9:45.

The Hornets will close out the season with a NAC and Northern Vermont University President's Cup contest against Northern Vermont University-Johnson on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 pm.  Lyndon's five seniors will be recognized prior to the game.
