Hornets fall at Dean in season opener

Box Score

Franklin, MA - Dean College scored five unanswered goals in the opening period and went on to defeat Northern Vermont University-Lyndon 12-5 on Wednesday afternoon, spoiling the debut of new Hornet head coach Brandon Melville.  The contest was Lyndon's season opener, while Dean improved to 2-0.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard just 14 seconds into the game when they won the opening face off and Brody Fredericks found the goal off of a feed from Anthony Trasacco.  Dean added goals from Tyler Minor, Trasacco, Juniel Jordan, and Louis Piccolo to make it 5-0 after one.

Fredericks scored again, this time off of an assist from Piccolo, to extend the Dean lead to 6-0 just over two minutes into the second period.  Shea Jones (Hull, MA) then scored unassisted to get the Hornets on the board with 12:15 to go in the first half.  That score would stand until the break, as neither team was able to score again.

Trasacco scored less than a minute into the third period to extend the Dean lead to 7-1.  Lyndon responded with back to back unassisted goals by Spencer Aubin (Sharon, MA) and Taner Onor (East Montpelier, VT) to cut the deficit to 7-3 at the 12:32 mark.  Another Trasacco goal, followed by a pair from Piccolo and another from Fredericks built the Bulldog advantge back to 11-3 after three.

Trasacco notched his fourth goal of the contest with just over five minutes remaining.  With 3:36 to go, the Hornets' Callan Singer (St. Johnsbury, VT) found Onor and Onor found the back of the goal for his second tally of the game.  Aubin then tallied for the second time to make the final score 12-5 in favor of the Bulldogs.

The Hornets outshot the Bulldogs 35-31 on the afternoon.  Dean goalie Alex Govoni stopped 18 of 23 shots on goal while Lyndon goalie Aaron Florence (Mandeville, LA) made nine saves in 21 shots on goal.  The Hornets held a slim 10-9 advantage in faceoffs won, while the Bulldogs got the better of the ground balls, 35-26.  Lyndon turned the ball over 23 times, compared to 25 for Dean.

Individually for Lyndon, Luc Parrett (Eden Mills, VT) came up with five ground balls, while Jones, Aubin, and Brandon Hunter (Glastonbury, CT) recovered three ground balls apiece.  Anthony Townsend (Pembroke, MA) and Justin Servidori (Yarmouth, MA) were each credited with two caused turnovers.  For Dean, Fredericks and Piccolo were each credited with two assists, while Joe White recovered five ground balls and Trasacco added four.

The Hornets return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Rivier University for a 7:00 pm faceoff.
