Hornets open NAC play with 12-3 win at Thomas

Waterville, ME - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's lacrosse team opened North Atlantic Conference play in a big way Tuesday afternoon, posting a commanding 12-3 win at Thomas College.  The win is Lyndon's first in four games this season, and the first for first year head coach Brandon Melville.  The Terriers fall to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the NAC.

Spencer Aubin (Sharon, MA) got the Hornets on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at the 8:27 mark of the opening quarter.  Taner Onor (East Montpelier, VT) scored unassisted with just ten seconds remaining to make it 2-0, Hornets, after one.

Hornet faceoff man Justin Servidori (Yarmouth, MA) won the second quarter draw, then Callan Singer (St. Johnsbury, VT) found Onor, who converted for his second goal 30 seconds into the quarter.  Singer added an unassisted goal at the 12:30 mark, and Shea Jones (Hull, MA) scored with an assist from Conor Brennan (Southington, CT) less than two minutes later to extend the Hornet lead to 5-0.  Jones then found Onor off of a set play out of a timeout and Onor notched his third goal of the game to make the score 6-0 at the half.

The Hornets dominated play in the opening half as they outshot the Terriers, 29-4.  Hornet goalie Aaron Florence (Mandeville, LA) was only called on to make three saves, while his Thomas counterpart, Damon Westhaver, stopped 11 Hornet attempts.  The Hornets also held a 301-13 advantage in ground balls at the half.

following a pair of Thomas penalties, Aubin scored a man up goal at the 10:47 mark of the third quarter.  Aubin then created a Thomas turnover, picked up the ground ball, and scored at the 9:05 mark to make it 8-0, Hornets.  Jones thenadded a pair of goals, with assists from Benjamin Cheever (Johnson, VT) and Aubin, to give the Hornets a 10-0 lead.  Thomas finally got on the board with 1:01 to go in the third when Jonathan Wilcox scored off of a feed from Samuel Haver.  Coming out of a timeout, Jones found Aubin in front of the goal and he picked up his fourth goal of the game to give Lyndon an 11-1 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Terriers' Jack Gallagher scored an unassisted man up goal with 4:25 to go in the game.  Aubin responded with a manu-up goal, his fifth of the contest, just over a minute later.  Wilcox scored unassisted at the 2:27 mark to complete the scoring.

Florence earned the win in goal for the Hornets, allowing only one Thomas score before being relieved by Camden LeClair (Colchester, VT) at the start of the fourth quarter.  Westhaver was tagged with the loss.  Lyndon outshot Thomas, 61-11, and dominated ground balls, 50-21.  Servidori had a strong day at the X, winning 13 of 17 faceoffs.

The Hornets return to action next Tuesday, when they host the University of Southenr Maine in a non-conference matchup.  That game will be played at the New Hampton School in New Hampton, NH, and will begin at 7:00 pm.
