Box Score Castine, ME - In a game that featured 25 lead changes and 11 ties, Northern Vermont University-Lyndon was able to make the plays down the stretch and come away with a 94-87 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in Sunday's North Atlantic Conference men's basketball game. The Hornets improve to 4-5 on the season and even thier conference record at 1-1. The Mariners fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the NAC.
After some back and forth play in the game's early going, Maine Maritime was able to briefly open some daylight and build what would turn out to be their largest lead at 23-17 with 12:28 to go in the first half. Lyndon's Peyton Olsen (Middleburgh, NY) would connect on back to back three point goals to bring the Hornets back within one, but Maine Maritime was able to hold onto the lead until another Olsen three put the Hornets back in front, 45-42, 1:31 before halftime. A Riley MacLeod jumper and a pair of free throws from Andrew Liebert put the Mariners back in front, but two Damon Denteh (Jamaica, NY) free throws sent the Hornets into halftime with a 47-46 advantage.
The second half was more back and forth, as neither team was able to take a lead of more than three points. Maine Maritime's Nicholas DePatsy connected on his third three-pointer of the contest to give the Mariners what would be their final lead at 79-78 with 4:01 remaining. Lyndon's Timothy Hoar (Shelburne Falls, MA) answered with a three-pointer to put the Hornets back in front, and the Hornets were able to put the game away by going 9/10 from the foul line down the stretch.
Olsen and Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY) each scored 20 points to pace the Hornets. Denteh filled the stat sheet with 16 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Hoar and Luke Fredsell (Whitesboro, NY) each chipped in 14 points, while Hoar and Kyle Cary (Selkirk, NY) each grabbed eight rebounds.
DePatsy finished with a game high 25 points to lead Maine Maritime. Liebert and DeMerrill Levy tallied 19 and 18 points, and Levy pulled down a game high nine rebounds.
The Hornets will close out the first semester with a non-conference home game against Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm.
