Hornet men edged by Colby-Sawyer

Lyndonville, VT - Trailing by two in the closing seconds, the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's basketball team was unable to convert and came up on the short end of a 95-92 result against Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday evening.  The Chargers improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Hornets fall to 4-6.

The Hornets started fast, Jumping out to an early 18-6 lead less than five minutes into the game.  Lyndon would lead by as much as 13 in the opening half, and took a 51-40 lead into intermission following Luke Fredsell's (Whitesboro, NY) buzzer beating three-pointer.

Colby-Sawyer climbed back into the game in the early portion of the second half.  The Chargers pulled even on a jumper from Patrick Coffey with 12:37 remaining in the contest.  The Hornets regained a four-point lead following threes from Dylan Torello (Port St. Lucie, FL) and Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY).  Colby-Sawyer responded with an 11-0 run to move in front, 77-70, with just over nine minutes to go.

This time it was the Hornets who answered.  Consecutive threes from Falkenburg, Damon Denteh (Jamaica, NY), and Fredsell put Lyndon back up by two.  Colby-Sawyer regained the advange following a pair of field goals from Terrence Harvey Jr. sandwiched around a putback basket from Omar Boone.

The Chargers maintained the advantage down the stretch, but a Denteh three brought the Hornets within two at 94-92 with 37 seconds to go.  Lyndon got a defensive stop on the next possession, but Peyton Olsen's (Middleburgh, NY) potential go ahead three was off the mark, and the Chargers' Patrick Coffey secured the rebound.  Coffey then made the first of two free throws, and when a desperation full court shot was off the mark, Colby-Sawyer had escaped with the win.

Coffey and Dana Bean led Colby-Sawyer with 20 points each.  Zack Caraballo and Scott Lampron came off the Charger bench to score 14 and ten points respectively.  Falkenburg led the Hornets with 20 points.  Fredsell added 19 and a game high six assists while Denteh finished with 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists.  Kyle Cary (Selkirk, NY) chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds while Tim Hoar (Shelburne Falls, MA) pulled down a game high ten rebounds.

The Hornets set a new school record as an NCAA Division III program with 22 made three-point goals in the contest, breaking the old mark of 17 threes, set in January of 2017.  Lyndon connected on 22 of 52 (42.3%) three-point attempts over the contest while Colby-Sawyer made seven of 21 (33.3%).  colby-Sawyer held a 45-42 rebounding advantage and scored 32 points off of 21 Hornet turnovers.  The Chargers made eight of 14 free throws, while the Hornets only went to the line for four shots, making two.

Lyndon is now off for final exams, the semester break, and the holidays.  the Hornets will return to action on Saturday, January 4th, when they travel to New England College for a 2:00 pm non-conference contest.
