Hornet women's tennis clinches NAC playoff berth despite loss to Husson

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's tennis team came up on the wrong end of a 9-0 result against North Atlantic Conference leading Husson University on Saturday morning.  The loss dropped Lyndon to 1-8 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.  Husson improves to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the NAC.

Husson took control of the match with three dominant wins in doubles.  The Eagles picked up 8-0 decisions in first and third flights, while the Husson team of Natalie Tilton and Hannah Malinen defeated Lyndon's Melissa Calabro (New Canaan, CT) and Roze Yar (Winooski, VT) 8-1 in second doubles.

The Eagles sustained their momentum into singles play.  Husson's #1, Ashley Matlock, was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Lyndon's Savannah Jackson (Barre, VT) in first singles, while Natalie Tilton defeated Faibe Achinda (Hinesburg, VT) 6-0, 6-1 in second flight.  Calabro was the only Hornet to win more than a game, as she fell to Malinen 6-1, 6-2 in third singles.  The Eagles picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins in fourth, fifth, and sixth singles to complete the sweep.

Despite the loss the Hornets clinched their first post-season berth since 2013 by virtue of NVU-Johnson's win over Thomas College today.  The Hornets will take the #4 seed into next weekend's NAC Championship Tournament.

Lyndon closes out the regular season on Sunday afternoon when they host Thomas in a 12:00 noon Senior Day match at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center.
