Correa Notches 1,000th point in Loss to Eagles

Box Score

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College men's basketball team came up short in their bid for a season sweep over Husson University Friday night in Stannard Gymnasium, falling 80-74 in North Atlantic Conference action.  Charles Correa Jr. (Prospect Heights, R.I.) tallied his 1,000th collegiate career point on a three-pointer with 13:58 left in the second half.

Correa finished with 22 points and three steals while Darnay Gray (Mashantucket, Conn.) also tallied 22 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Hornets (7-12, 6-7 NAC).  Josiah Woodruff (Washington, D.C.) added 12 points and Eric Vargas chipped in 10.

The Eagles (13-6, 11-2 NAC) went a perfect 25-for-25 from the free throw line.  Raheem Anderson, who hit 16 from the charity stripe, finished with 24 points, five rebounds, and six assists.  Mitch Worcester followed with 22 points and four rebounds.  Justin Martin picked up a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Correa gave the Hornets a quick 5-0 lead after capitalizing on back to back Eagle turnovers.  However, Husson answered with a 19-2 run for a 19-7 lead with 11:22 on the clock.  The Hornets were able to closed the gap rather quickly though, bringing the score to 21-18 on a trey from Xavier Colbert (Manassas, Va.) with 8:58 to go in the first.

The teams went back and forth for a little bit before the Eagles made a push late in the half, taking a 40-28 lead into the break.

Husson seemed in control for the beginning of the second half until Correa and Gray combined for 15 straight points, including Correa's 1,000th, to knot the score at 47-47.

The Eagles tried to pull away as the half progressed but the Hornets stayed within striking distance and a layup from Correa with 1:14 left pulled them within a possession at 73-71.  On the following possession, Anderson found Worcester for a three, and the five-point lead.  The Hornets were unable to convert on the next time down the court and had to send the Eagles to the line.  Four made free throws from the Eagles and a three from Vargas finished out the scoring as the game ended 80-74.

The Hornets host Maine Maritime Academy Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as the Eagles travel over the Johnson State for a 1:00 p.m. tip as well.
