Hornet women run away from Eagles in NAC opener.

Lyndonville, VT - The Lyndon State College women's basketball team ran out to a 31-5 first quarter lead and never looked back on the way to defeating Green Mountain College 104-51 on Tuesday evening.  With the win the Hornets improved to 2-2 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 1-2.  The game was the North Atlantic Conference opener for both teams.

The Hornets and Eagles were tied, 5-5, three minutes into the contest.  At that point Lyndon outscored Green Mountain 26-0 over final seven minutes of the quarter to build a 31-5 advantage after one.  Senior center Mikayla Hodge (Newport, VT) scored 13 points in the quarter and grabbed seven rebounds, while senior guard Gabrielle Foy (Wilton, ME) added eight points, connecting on two of three three-point attempts.

Lyndon extended the run to 32-0 to start the second quarter, making the score 37-5 two minutes into the quarter.  Green Mountain's Mercedes Rideout (Nashville, TN) ended the Lyndon run by connecting on a three at the 7:40 mark.  Lyndon remained firmly in control, however, and built a 51-17 lead going into halftime.  Hornet freshman Alisha Celley (Cabot, VT) connected on all three of her shots in the quarter.

All ten Hornets played substanitally throughout the second half as the Hornets pulled away further.  A three-pointer from Maria Ramos (Lebanon, NH) with 3:37 to go put the Hornets at the centurty mark, and they went on to the 53-point win.

Foy made five of ten three-point attempts on the way to a team leading 23 point effort.  Hodge recorded a double double with 20 points and 16 rebounds, and added four blocked shots.  Celley added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Ramos chipped in 12 points.  Freshman guard Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH) handed out a team best seven assists.  Rideout totaled 21 points to lead the Eagles.

Lyndon owned a commanding 57-32 advantage on the glass and forced 32 Eagle turnovers while committing only 14 themselves.

The Hornets return to action on Friday evening when they travel to Thomas College for another NAC tilt.  Tip-off is set for 5:30.  Green Mountain Hosts Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday.
