Big second half propels Eagles past Hornets

NASHUA, N.H. – The Lyndon State College men's lacrosse team were downed by Daniel Webster College 15-8 Thursday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.

Daniel Webster jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter before Shea Jones (Hull, Mass.) scored in a man-up situation with 5:14 left in the quarter.

The Eagles picked up another goal with 8:32 to go in the second quarter before the Hornets rattled off three goals, one by Kevin McCarthy (West Sayville, N.Y.) and two by Zachary Carey (Exeter, N.H.), to tie the game at 4-4.  However, the Eagles notched a goal with just eight second left in the half to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.

Daniel Webster scored five straight goals in the third quarter before the Hornets answered with just under two minutes left in the quarter as Adam Peeler (Worcester, Mass.) set up Colin Young (Sharon, Vt.) for the score.

Heading into the final quarter up with a 10-5 advantage, the hosts didn't let up and tallied five more goals before the final horn.  McCarthy, Jones, and Carey all tallied a goal in the quarter but it wasn't enough as the Eagles finished the game on top 15-8.

Zachary Carey led the Hornets in scoring with three goals while McCarthy and Jones each added a pair of goals and an assist.  Young added a goal while going 9-for-16 in faceoffs and tied for a game-high seven groundballs.

Shane Morin (Salem, N.H.) received the loss in net making two saves while allowing five goals for the first 30 minutes.  Marcus Bessette (Pembroke, N.H.) made 12 saves and allowed 10 goals while in net for the second half.

David Downie led the Eagles with four goals and two assists while Anthony Cotoni and Tre Mason scored three goals and tallied three assists each.  Curtis Larade recorded the win for thirty minutes of work in the first half, allowing four goals while making just one save.  Harley Hagan finished out the final 30 minutes making three saves and allowing four goals.

The Hornets (2-7, 2-3 NAC) host Maine Maritime on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for a North Atlantic Conference game.
