Box Score RUTLAND, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's tennis team were edged out by Green Mountain College 5-4 in North Eastern Athletic Conference East (NEAC East) tennis action on Saturday at the Vermont Sport and Fitness Club.
Green Mountain (1-9, 1-6 NEAC East) earned its first win since the program re-established itself in the fall of 2014. That feat was only accomplished with a very important sweep in the doubles action.
The duo of Jannelle O'Connell and Claire Chapman started the match in top flight doubles action with a tough 9-7 victory over the Lyndon pairing of Carina Alden and Alexa Richard.
GMC's Paige Vlahos and Lauren Coye surged past Lyndon's Haley Bouley and Samantha Fisher, 8-2, while the Eagles' grouping of Ruby Santiago and Nang Hseng Leng Wann upset the Hornets' Savannah Jackson and Roze Yar, 8-3.
As it turned out the Eagles needed each point from doubles play as they found a much more difficult path through singles action.
Lyndon (0-11, 0-7 NEAC East) mounted a fierce comeback taking four of the six singles slots including both of the top two flights. Alden and Richard each earned straight sets victories in their matches. Alden took down Vlahos in the first flight with a pair of 6-1 set victories and Richard ousted O'Connell in number two singles, 6-0, 6-2.
The Eagles were able to clinch the match with a pair of victories in third and fourth flight singles. Chapman earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the third pairing, while Coye used a pair of 6-2 set victories to earn the win for the team.
Lyndon put the pressure on by taking the final two slots as Jackson defeated Santiago, 6-3, 6-2 and Achinda won a marathon matchup against Leng Wann, 5-7, 7-5, 10-4.
Green Mountain and Lyndon will complete the back end of the home-and-away series tomorrow morning with the match set for 10 a.m. in Lyndonville.
