Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Hornet women's tennis edged by VTSU Johnson on Senior Day

Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon women's tennis team closed out their season with a North Atlantic Conference match against Vermont State University Johnson on Saturday morning.  The Badgers edged the Hornets, 4-3, to pick up their first win in nine outings this season.  The Hornets finish the campaign winless in ten matches, including six conference contests.

The Lyndon first doubles team of Hawa Mubarak (Burlington, VT) and Chloe Murphy (Manchester, NH) got the Hornets off to a strong start with a 6-3 victory over Johnson's Kali Wooster and Caitlyn Morey.  However the Badgers soon evened things with a 6-2 win in second doubles, with Kristie Zator and Jaylah Jones getting the best of Lindsey Gannon (Beverly, MA) and Megan Richardson (Essex Junction, VT).

Johnson picked up a forfeit win in fifth singles to take the lead, and Zator bested Gannon, 6-3, 6-0 in third singles, meaning that the Hornets would need to win all three reaining singles matches to come away with a team victory.  Richardson's 6-0, 6-0 fourth singles win over Rose Oakland brought Lyndon closer, and Mubarak's hard fought 6-3, 6-4 win over Wooster pulled the Hornets even in the match.  Lyndon was unable to complete the comeback, however, as Morey edged Murphy, 7-5, 6-3, to pull out the match for the Badgers.

With Saturday being the final match of the season, Gannon, the team's only senior, was honored prior to the match.  She was presented tokens of appreciation for her contributions to the tennis program, and was greeted on the court by family and friends.

Mubrak, Murphy, and Rischarson are all expected to return to form the nucleus of next season's Hornet team.
