Brighton, MA - The Vermont State University Lyndon women's tennis team came up short in a pair of matches at Simmons University on Sunday. The Sharks earned a 6-1 victory in a North Atlantic Conference and a 7-0 triumph in a non-conference tilt, handing the Hornets their seventh and eighth losses of the season. Simmons improved to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the NAC
In the opener, the Hornets' top doubles team of Lindsey Gannon (Beverly, MA) and Chloe Murphy (Manchester, NH) fell 6-0 to Masha Shutts and Amoli Vad. Simmons swept the remaining doubles matches by retirement and default. The Sharks then took five of six singles matches, with Gannon downing Katelyn Bruce by retirement after taking the first set, 6-4, to give the Hornets their only point.
The second match was all Simmons, as the Sharks didn't lose a game in any flight. In doubles, Shutts and Vad again downed Gannon and Murphy. The Sharks took the other three flights by retirement and default respectively. In singles, Shutts, Emilie Lapointe, and Emma Parsons earned straight-set wins at the top three spots over Hawa Mubarak (Burlington, VT), Murphy, and Gannon respectively. The Sharks claimed the remaining matches by retirement or default.
The Hornets (0-8, 0-4 NAC) will travel to the State University of New York at Delhi on Wednesday afternoon for another NAC matchup. Doubles play will begin at 3:00 pm, with singles to follow.
