Hornets lose first conference match in shutout

Box Score

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's soccer team hosted Castleton University Saturday for the first North Atlantic Conference match of the season for both teams.  Castleton would finish on top by a score of 8-0.

The Castleton Spartans wasted very little time getting on the scoreboard Saturday and in just the second minute of the game Mallory Costello sent a cross from the left side of the field to Eva Clark, who placed the ball in the net to put the Spartans on top.  Less than two minutes later it was Costello's turn to get in the scoring column after receiving a cross from the right side from Jess Phillips and putting the ball in the left side of the goal.

After a Lyndon foul in the 24th minute, Phillips took the free kick from about 25 yards out and cracked a shot on the ground into the left side of the goal past Hornet keeper Johanna Sargent (West Brookfield, Vt.).  Again less than two minutes later Nicole Wershoven would add another goal after getting the ball away from two defenders and letting off a shot that would get by Sargent on the right side.  The Spartans would finish the half 5-0 after Bronwen Hopwood stole the ball from a Hornet defender and aired the ball into the left side of the net.

The Spartans would continue to keep Sargent busy in net in the second half and in 78th minute Hannah Murdough lined a shot over Sargent from outside the box on the right side of the field that found the side netting.  42 seconds later Hopwood would cross the ball from the left side of the field to Madison Aponte who carefully placed it in the back of the net.  Castleton would cap off the scoring in the 84th minute when Kiley Baran passed the ball back to Megan O'Shea who, after a touch forward into the box, shot it into the top right of the goal.

Lyndon keeper Johanna Sargent would finish the game with 14 saves while Castleton keeper Jessica Binkowski would record two saves and pick up the win in 59 minutes of work.

The Hornets (1-3-1, 0-1-1 NAC) travel to play Norwich Wednesday at 7:00pm.  The Spartans (3-4-0, 1-0-0 NAC) travel to play Rensselaer on Thursday at 7:30pm.
