Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College men's soccer team was downed in a non-conference tilt at Saint Michael's College on Thursday, 7-0. The loss dropped the Hornets to 0-4 on the season as the Purple Knights improved to 2-1.
The Purple Knights were led by Junior Aaron DaCosta who netted two goals and freshman Cole McIntire who scored once and dished out a pair of assists. Juniors Parker Beaupré and Liam Mahoney, sophomore Jackson Steele and first-year Bradley Anair also found the back of the net.
Sophomore Daniel du Feu got the win in net for Saint Michael's for his first-half work. Senior Nicco Roque and junior Matthew McBride shared the second half minutes to complete the shutout.
Sophomore Matt LaClair (Beekmantown, N.Y.) and senior Jason Pelkey (Barre, Vt.) each saw a period's worth of work, recording four saves each for the Hornets.
DaCosta put the Purple Knights on the board in the eighth minute with a sliding shot off a cross from the left side of the box from senior Jack Loud. Just five minutes later, senior Gonzalo Mengotti sent a pass through the center of the field to spring McIntire on a breakaway who knocked a ground shot to the left as LaClair rushed him.
Just under 20 minutes into the game the Hornets got off their first shot as Abukar Hassan (Kenya) launched the ball wide left from about 25 yards.
DaCosta notched his second score in the 21st minute on a lead pass from McIntire. Mahoney found the back of the net four minutes later with the help of McIntire.
In the 40th minute, Ajeing Dau (Charlotte, Vt.) stole the ball from a defender just outside the box, turned toward the goal and shot the ball wide of the net.
In the 60th minute, Pelkey made a beautiful diving save to deny sophomore Brendan Todd but Anair was there to slip the ball in the net. About seven minutes later, Beaupré added his unassisted goal with a shot through traffic. Steele received a long breakout pass up the left side from senior Thomas Antensaye and notched his goal in the 73rd minute.
