Box Score 2 LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – Lyndon came into today's North Atlantic Conference double-header against Colby-Sawyer needing to win both games to make the postseason.
The Hornets were looking to make the NAC playoffs for the second time in as many seasons, but came up just one game short as they fell to Colby Sawyer in game one 5-3.
"It's been a very successful season in a number of different ways," said Lyndon Head Coach, Tom White. "From where we came from, to get the program to where we're competing for a playoff spot on the final day, that's a successful season for us."
The Chargers got things going in the top of the third when Chris Hood hit a single down the left field line, which in turn brought in Nathan Frongillo and Joey Fenuccio.
Hood went 2-3 in game one. Fenuccio kept the Chargers going in the fourth when he singled to right field, eventually scoring Connor Henry.
The run that would become the game-winner came across in the top of the fourth when Fenuccio stole second base, allowing Jeff Dunn to steal home, plating Colby-Sawyer's fourth run.
"Things just didn't fall our way," said White. "They're getting better, they're a young team and they're feisty and they're not going to give up. They have a lot of pride over there at Colby-Sawyer."
White tells us what his team could have done differently to avoid the loss.
"The bats have to come to life earlier," he said. "We had to swing the bats better in game one and tip your hat to Colby-Sawyer, they played hard."
Some of Colby-Sawyer's pride may have been left in the dugout for game two, as Lyndon beat the Chargers 8-3.
They got off to a quick 1-0 lead in the first, but Lyndon answered the bottom of the second, as they were able to load the bases.
Ryan Cordeiro (Rollinsford, N.H.) drew the walk that brought home Ian Sackett (Lyndon, Vt.) to tie the game at one. David Laroche (Franklin, Vt.) scored when Kevin Tufo (Colchester, Conn.) hit a hard ground ball to short stop, forcing the short stop to go to second base on the play.
Lyndon's fourth and eventual game winner came off the bat of Tufo. A Cordeiro walk set things up for Tufo, as he was able to double down the left field line and Cordeiro came all the way around from first base to score, putting Lyndon ahead 4-2.
Hood went two-for-three with two runs batted in while Reece Tanguay (Essex Junction, Vt.) went two-for-three in game two.
The Chargers added one more run in the seventh, but the damage had been done. The Hornets walk away with an 8-3 victory.
Lyndon finishes its season with a record of 11-25 overall, and 10-14 in NAC play. Colby-Sawyer goes to 5-31 overall, and 3-20 in NAC action.
"It was great to see the team come back after being eliminated from the playoffs in the first game," said White. "To come back and play hard, play strong, and to win. Pitching did well, defense was good, we swung the bats great, and it was a great effort to win that game."
