Weymouth, MA - Wentworth Institute of Technology pounded out 24 runs and 28 hits in Saturday's non-conference baseball doubleheader with Vermont State University Lyndon. As a result, the host Leopards swept both games of the twin bill to improve to 10-6 on the season. Lyndon fell to 2-4.
Game 1 - Wentworth 17, VTSU Lyndon 5
Leading 7-5 through three and a half innings, the Leopards broke the game open by putting seven runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lukas Poirier was the hitting star with a triple, two singles, four runs batted in, and two runs scored. Matt Robinson added a home run, a triple, and a single with three RBIs and two runs scored. Nick Cullinan had two hits and drove in four runs and Alex chipped in with three hits and two RB!s.
Matt Gonyeau (St. Albans, VT) paced Lyndon with three hits and a run scored. Tredell Blow (Yorktown, VA) and Aaron LeFrancois (Rutland, VT) had two hits apiece for the Hornets. Jack Daicar's (Kingston, ON) double was Lyndon's only extra base hit.
Wentworth starter Nigel Cross allowed five runs, three earned, over four innings to earn the win. Carlos Rodriguez (La Mirada, CA) started for Lyndon and absorbed the loss after giving up seven runs, six earned, over the first three innings.
Game 1 - Wentworth 7, VTSU Lyndon 3
Wentworth plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Robinson had another big game at the dish with three base hits and two runs scored, Mike Sibert had a triple, a single, a run batted in and two runs scored.
Eyon Tembreull (Vergennes, VT) had a single and a double with a run batted in at the top of the Lyndon order. Austin Begelow (East Hampton, CT) had a pair of hits and Gonyeau delivered an RBI single.
Wentworth starter Aaron Masson picked up the win after allowing two runs and five hits while striking out six over four innings. Lyndon starter Isaiah Guteirrez (Nashua, NH) allowed five runs in taking the loss.
The Hornets remain on the road on Sunday, playing two games at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. First pitch has been moved up to 11:00 am.
