Buzzards Bay, MA - Playing in rainy conditions on Sunday afternoon, the Vermont State University Lyndon baseball team couldn't keep up with Massachusetts Maritime Academy, dropping both ends of a non-conference doubleheader. Mass Maritime improved to 8-4 with the sweep, while Lyndon fell to 2-6.
Game 1 - Mass Maritime 10, VTSU Lyndon 2
The Buccaneers plated runs in each of the first four innings in cruising to the victory. Jake Duffy led the Mass Marritime attack with a home run, a triple, four runs batted in, and two runs scored. Colsen Loughren added a solo home run and Max Dunn had a pair of hits and scored twice.
Ryan Alt (Poultney, VT) and Tredell Blow (Yorktown, VA) had Lyndon's only hits. Blow scored both Hornet runs.
Sean Hallissey picked up the complete game victory for Mass Maritime. He allowed only one earned run and two hits over seven innings. Lyndon starter Nathan Bigelow (East Hampton, CT) took the loss after allowing seven runs and eight hits over four innings.
Game 2 - Mass Maritime 10, VTSU Lyndon 4
Lyndon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Mass Maritime scored in each inning of a game called due to worsening weather two batters into the top of the sixth inning. Duffy had another big game with a pair of hits and three runs scored, Loughren hit his second home run of the day, while Michael Logiudice and Kevin Heine both delivered two hits and two runs batted in.
Blow led Lyndon with a double, a single, and two RBIs. Sean Dunton (Quechee, VT) had two hits and Alt scored twice.
Chase Dwight allowed four runs over four innings while striking out four in picking up the win. Hornet starter Ian Hedgepeth (Norwich, VT) took the loss.
The Hornets will return to the Boston area for four games next weekend. On both Saturday and Sunday they will play the University of Maine at Augusta at 1:30 pm, then face weekend host Fisher College at 5:00 pm.
