Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington rode a pair of double-doubles to a narrow 69-65, North Atlantic Conference victory over Lyndon at Dearborn Gymnasium Friday night.
With the win, the Beavers improved to 5-15 overall and 4-9 in the NAC. The loss ends the Hornets four-game winning streak and drops them to 7-12 overall and 6-7 in league play.
In a see-saw battle early on, Lyndon jumped out to an eight-point first half lead only to see Farmington rally back to claim an eight-point lead of its own at intermission. UMF shot 57 percent from the field in the opening half and outscored Lyndon 18-4 in the paint.
Avery King (Pawtucket, R.I.) wasted very little time getting the Hornets back into the game early in the second half as he scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the period nailing five three-pointers along the way. Lyndon eroded a 10-point UMF lead down to four with 11:35 remaining in the half.
UMF regained control and pushed the advantage back to 10 points, but Lyndon's defensive pressure caused timely turnovers in the final minutes to give the Hornets a window of opportunity. With a minute remaining, the Beavers held a three-point lead. Lyndon's David Johnson (Washington, D.C.) recorded a steal and fired the equalizer from long range, but the shot found all iron.
The Hornets were forced to foul and UMF hit all six free throws in the last 30 seconds.
Nick Hilton scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Uriah Forest-Bulley followed with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Eric Berry had three assists for the winners n and Jimmie Chaisson had six rebounds and two steals.
Rontrez Purcell (Washington, D.C.) and Rob Alers (Central Falls, R.I.) had 10 points each in the loss while Johnson collected a team-high six rebounds. Alers also dished out five assists in the contest.
Lyndon returns to the court tomorrow afternoon for a 1 p.m. tip-off with Thomas College in Waterville, Maine.
