Box Score CANTON, New York — Lyndon got off to a quick start against the SUNY Canton on Saturday, but after giving up the first goal of the game, the Kangaroos took little time to show their dominance, reeling off 12 straight first half goals to put the game out of reach.
On a day when the weather was less than hospitable — snow fell for all but a few minutes of the third quarter — Lyndon opened with a little heat. Sophomore midfielder Colin Young (South Royalton, Vt.) controlled the opening faceoff and less than two minutes later freshman attackman Dominic DiTommaso (Ashby, Mass.) buried a shot from the crease on a feed from freshman midfielder Justin Mosher (Salem, N.H.). Lyndon took its only lead of the day, 1-0, but the Hornets could only enjoy their lead for two minutes before the Canton onslaught.
Tanner Pratt's four goals and three assists, and Jason Thompson's two goals and four assists led the way for Canton. Thompson put on a savvy display of passing and shooting, and Pratt fired some laser shots at the goal, but it was hardly a two-man show for the Kangaroos. Thirteen different Canton players got on the scoreboard, as the Kangaroos coasted to an easy 22-3 victory
"I think this was our most disappointing game of the season," said Lyndon State Head Coach Richard Aberle. "We played with much too little discipline—we took too many penalties, we were dominated on ground balls, we did not pass well, and we did not move on effectively on defense—SUNY Canton played smart lacrosse—they passed well on offense and 17 or their 22 goals were assisted goals. They created openings off their passing."
It wasn't all bad for the Hornets. After getting off only four shots in the first half against Canton, the Hornets managed to outshoot the Kangaroos, 27-22in the second half of the game. DiTomasso led the Hornets with two goals, and freshman midfielder Billy Bazyk (Manchester, Vt.) had one goal and one assist. Junior attackman Richard Aberle (Essex, N.Y.) and Mosher each recorded an assist on the game.
Freshman goalie Marcus Bessette (Pembroke, N.H.) recorded 15 saves in the first half on 29 shots-on-goal, increasing his four-goal total on the season to 64. Going into the Canton game, Bessette had ranked 11th in the nation in save percentage among all NCAA Division III goalies. Freshman Shane Morin (Salem, N.H.) recorded eight saves in the second half for the Hornets on 16 shots-on-goal.
The Hornets return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to New York City to face the SUNY Maritime Privateers under the Throg's Neck Bridge in the Bronx. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
