Box Score 2 LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – Lyndon's chances of a berth in the 2014 North Eastern Athletics Conference Eastern Division playoffs took a hit over the weekend with losses to Thomas and Castleton.
Sunday afternoon, the Spartans rebounded from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to sweep the singles matches and walk off with a 7-2 match victory over the Hornets.
Meghan Susslin topped Lyndon's Christina Boyce (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) 6-0, 6-1 in first singles to pull Castleton even at 2-2 and Olga McIntyre gave the visitors the lead for good when she bested Alexandria Maynard (East Hampton, Conn.) 6-3, 6-1 in the second flight.
Sara Novenstern kept momentum in the Spartans' corner with a 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles before Shannon Haggerty sealed the win with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Carina Alden (New Marlborough, Mass.) in the fourth flight.
Kaydeen Juarie (1-6, 6-1, 10-1) and Kayla Zsido (6-1, 6-2) closed out the Castleton sweep with win over Alexa Richard (Haverhill, Mass.) and Stephanie Burke (Claremont, N.H.) in fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
In doubles action Susslin and Haggerty defeated Jones and Alden 8-3 in the first flight before the duo of Richard and Maynard recorded a hard-fought 9-8 (-3) victory over Novenstern and Ruby Bushey in the No. 2 matchup. Boyce and Burke brought home Lyndon's second and final win of the day in third doubles by topping Taylor Reynolds and Monika Plante 8-6.
On Saturday, Thomas College recorded an 8-1 match victory over Lyndon at the Top Notch Resort in Stowe, Vt. The entire match was played under a pro set format.
In doubles play, Jessica Bowen and Lindsey Allen defeated Boyce and Jones 8-0 in the first flight before Dalia Williams and Olivia Mora beat Maynard and Alden by a score of 8-2l.
In No. 3 doubles, the Terrier team of Katie McAllister and Logan Bruneau topped Richard and Burke 8-6.
In singles competition, Bowen defeated Boyce 8-1 in the No. 1 matchup and Allen took the No. 2 match by besting Maynard 8-1. Williams beat Jones 8-5 before Mora topped Alden 8-1 in No. 4 singles.
Lyndon earned its lone victory on the day when Richard topped Ameilia Guimond 8-2 in No. 5 singles. Emily Howard beat Burke 5-2 in sixth singles to close out the match.
Lyndon (3-7, 2-4) returns to action on Wednesday when it entertains Plymouth State at 3:30 p.m.
