LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — The Lyndon women's tennis team earned its first victory of the 2013 season Saturday with a slim 5-4 win over Castleton State at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center.
In doubles action, the Hornet tandem of Kayla Flynn (Johnston, R.I.) and Olivia Bernard (Barton, Vt.) recorded an 8-5 victory over Meghan Sussin and Sara Novenstern. In second flight doubles, Castleton's Olga McIntyre and Kaydeen Juaire defeated Alexandria Maynard (East Hampton, Conn.) and Kelly Butler (Hubbardston, Mass.) 9-7. Lyndon's was awarded a win in third doubles by forfeit.
In singles play, Flynn topped Sussin 6-2, 6-2 in first singles before Novenstern fought back to earn a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Bernard in No. 2 singles. McIntyre (6-1, 6-0) and Juaire (6-2, 6-4) kept the Spartans' victory hopes alive with wins over Maynard and Butler in third and fourth singles respectively, but a 6-4, 6-2 victory by Lyndon's Alex Richard over Monika Plante ended the Spartan surge and carried the hosts on to the match win.
