LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — The Lyndon women's tennis team fell to 2-0 on the season Saturday with a 9-0 loss to the University of Southern Maine at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center. The entire match was played under a pro set format.
In doubles action, the Huskie team of Mary Moran and Emily Boutin defeated Kayla Flynn (Johnston, R.I.) and Olivia Bernard (Barton, Vt.) 8-1 in the No. 1 matchup. In second flight singles, USM's Jenna Willey and Courtney Aldrich beat Kelly Butler (Hubbardston, Mass.) and Carina Alden (New Marlborough, Mass.) 8-1 and the tandem of Katie Quinn and Liz Martin completed the sweep for the visitors with an 8-0 win over Hannah Frigon (Cabot, Vt.) and Stephanie Burke (Claremont, N.H.) in No. 3 doubles.
In first singles, Moran won by default over Flynn before Willey topped Bernard by a score of 8-1. Boutin defeated Butler 8-0 in third singles, Aldrich blanked Alden 8-0 in fourth singles and Quinn bested Burke 8-1 in the fifth flight.
Christine Savage closed out the match for the Huskies with an 8-1 victory over Burke in No. 6 singles.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 2-0 on the season while Lyndon drops to 0-2.
On Friday, the Plattttsburgh State women's tennis team turned in a 9-0 sweep of Lyndon in their 2013 opener at the Memorial Hall Courts.
Five Cardinals made their collegiate debuts in Friday's match, with junior Emily Carlin serving as the veteran presence. Carlin teamed with freshman Kaitlyn Healy at No. 1 doubles as the pair cruised to an 8-0 victory against Bernard and Butler.
Plattsburgh State rookies Sarah Drexinger and Olivia Wyand defeated Burke and Maynard, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Ally Demeter and junior transfer Janel Weaver rounded out the doubles flight for the Cardinals, walking away with an 8-0 win over and Alden.
Carlin assumed the top spot in the singles slate for the Cardinals, defeating Bernand by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Healy, Drexinger and Demeter followed with sweeps in their singles matches, while Wyand turned in a 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles. Tedi Politano wrapped up singles competition with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Alden in the matchup at fifth singles.
