NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University tennis team picked up its first win of the 2013 season with a 7-2 victory over Lyndon in non-conference action at Shapiro Fieldhouse.
The Cadets (1-1) got multiple victories from Christian Hoskey and Joseph Dvorak, as well as Ryan Grindle and Patrick Ogden.
NU swept all three doubles matches to jump out to an early 3-0 lead that it would never look back from as well as earn first-year head coach Jo Lynn Ostler her first career collegiate coaching victory.
Hoskey took No. 1 singles over Michael Howard (Rocky Hill, Conn.) 6-2, 6-1 and teamed with Ogden to down Daniel Weiner (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Tyler Schofield (Middleboro, Mass.) at No. 1 doubles 8-3. Ogden also picked up the victory at third singles with straight set wins of 6-2 and 7-5 over Weiner.
Grindle cruised to a victory over Schofield at second singles by scores of 6-2, 6-0, while Dvorak battled past Tyler Hall (Keene, N.H.) at fifth singles by scores of 6-4, 6-2. Grindle and Dvorak combined to edge Howard and Hall at second doubles 9-7.
Kristine Brammer and Gustavo Avila picked up their first win of the season at third doubles, slipping by Lyndon's John Corey (Bennington, Vt.) and Chris Legge (Essex Junction, Vt.) 9-7.
Corey won at fourth singles 6-2, 7-5 over Brammer and Michael Desmond (Enfield, Conn.) defeated Marshall Core (Folsom, La.) 6-2, 6-0 to account for Lyndon's two victories. The loss dropped the Hornets to 0-2 on the season.
