Lyndon slips past arch-rival Johnson

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — The Lyndon women's tennis team took a step closer the earning a berth in the upcoming North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division playoffs with a narrow 5-4 win over arch-rival Johnson State at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center.

The Hornet duo of Kayla Flynn (Johnston, R.I.) and Maria Parr (Montpelier, Vt.) staked the hosts to a 1-0 lead after first doubles with an 8-3 victory over Emily Miller and Annette Kaminski. But the early advantage proved to be short-lived as the Badgers rebounded from the deficit to take the final two doubles matches of the afternoon.

Johnson's Maegen Ploof and Alyssa Greene bested Olivia Bernard (Westmore, Vt.) and Kelsey Johnson (White River Junction, Vt.) 8-6 in No. 2 doubles before Catlyn Hughes and Ace Morrison-Taylor walked off with an 8-6 win over Lyndon's Margaret George (Glover, Vt.) and Alexandria Maynard (East hampton, Conn.) in the third flight.

In singles play, Lyndon responded – winning four of the six matches – to take the match. Flynn topped Kaminski 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 singles while Johnson defeated Miller in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. In third flight singles, Parr beat Green 6-1, 6-1 before Ploof recorded a 7-5, 6-2 win over Bernard in No. 4 singles.

George grabbed the Hornets' fifth and final win in fifth flight singles, topping Chelsea Vallone-Curtis 6-4, 6-4, and Morrison-Taylor brought home the final Badger victory of the day, a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Kelly Butler (Hubbardston, Mass.) in No. 6 singles.
