Hornets split weekend matches

On Saturday, the University of Massachusetts Boston women's tennis team defeated Lyndon 8-1 in their home-opener at the Boston College High School courts. With the victory, the Beacons improve to 2-1 on the season while the loss drops the Hornets to 0-2 overall.

UMass Boston's Anitra Kloczewiak played well out of the No. 1 singles spot, defeating Jenn Falsetti (Albany, N.Y.), 6-1, 6-2. The Beacons' Wendy Steinman also was efficient in her fifth singles match, winning 6-2, 6-0 over freshman Margaret George (Glover, Vt.). UMB's Destanee Ringler (6-2, 7-5) and Samantha Counts (6-4, 6-3) won in straight sets out of the No. 2 and 4r single spots, respectively, over Kayla Flynn (Johnston, R.I.) and Amber Hartman (Readsboro, Vt.). 

UMass-Boston's MaKenna Hughes needed a tie-breaker to earn the 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over Maria Parr (Montpelier, Vt.) in third singles play while Hieu Nguyen did not drop a set against Kaitlin Cunningham (South Stratford, Vt.) before Cunningham withdrew from play due to an injury suffered during the action.

In doubles action, Kloczewiak and Hughes teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Falsetti and Kelsey Johnson (White River Junction, Vt.), 8-2. Parr and Flynn were able to avoid the shutout for the Hornets, collecting the 9-8 (7-4) win in number two doubles action over Steinman and Ringler while Counts and Nguyen topped George and Hartman, 8-3, in third doubles play.

On Sunday, the Hornets rebounded to capture an 8-1 victory over Mitchell College in New London, Conn.

The Hornets began the day by sweeping all three doubles contests to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Flynn and Parr teamed up for an 8-4 victory over Mackenzie Flannagan and Kelly Walsh at the No. 1 spot. and the team of Falsetti and Johnson took No. 2 singles by a score of 8-1 over Lauren Rowley and Amanda Resnick. Hartman and George took the final doubles match by a score of 8-1 over Ashley Boutin and Rebecca Ciccarone.

The Hornets carried the momentum into singles play, winning five of six matches to clinch the overall victory. Parr defeated Walsh at the No. 2 spot by scores of 6-1, 6-0 while Flynn was victorious at No. 3 by finals of 6-2, 6-0. The lone singles win for the Mariners came from Flannagan at the No. 1 spot. She defeated Falsetti in straight sets by scores of 6-1, 6-0 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Hartman (6-0, 6-2) and George (6-3, 6-3) closed out the match with wins over Boutin and Caitlin Brown at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
