Waterville, ME - Vermont State University Lyndon men's basketball players Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) and Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) have been named to the North Atlantic Conference Honor Roll for the week ending February 1st, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Doyle averaged a double double in three games last week, logging 11.0 points and 11.3 rebounds per contest. He began the week with a ten point, ten rebound effort at Thomas College last Tuesday, then followed that up with a 21 point, 20 rebound outing against SUNY Delhi on Friday. His 20 rebounds and his 15 defensive rebounds in that game were both modern era (2008-present) Lyndon program records. Doyle is averaging 10.3 points and 8.9 rebounds on the season, and 12.4 points and 9.6 rebounds in conference play. He currently ranks 3rd in the NAC in rebounding.
Gonyea was both highly productive and highly efficient last week. He averaged 25.3 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.7 steals per game while shooting 50% from the floor, 44.4% from the three-point arc, and 90.9% from the free throw line. After 21 and 25 point efforts against Thomas and Delhi respectively, he capped the week by leading the Hornets to a 111-108 victory over SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday afternoon. In that contest he only took 11 shots from the floor, making six, but was 17/20 from the free throw line. He scored 22 of his 30 in the second half, as Lyndon rallied from a 15-point deficit to come away with a big NAC win. Gonyea is averaging 21.3 points per game on the season and 24.1 points per game in conference play, ranking him 3rd in the conference in both categories.
Doyle, Gonyea, and the Hornets will return to action on Friday evening when they host Maine Maritime Academy in andother NAC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm in Stannard Gymnasium.
