Waterville, ME - The Vermont State University Lyndon men's basketball team rallied from ten points down with 3:30 to go in Tuesday's North Atlantic Conference men's basketball game to close within a single point of Thomas College. The Hornets had a chance to take the lead or tie on three consecutive possessions, but came up empty, allowing the host Terriers to escape with a 78-72 victory. With the result, the Terriers improved to 7-12 overall and 6-6 in NAC play, while the Hornets slipped to 6-12 overall and 4-7 in conference action.
The game was tightly contested from the opening tip, with neither team able to create separation in the first half. Lyndon answered several Thomas scoring runs, highlighted by a mid-half surge sparked by Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY), who finished through contact on consecutive possessions to keep the Hornets within striking distance. Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) added timely perimeter shooting as Lyndon took a three-point advantage into halftime.
The Hornets quickly pushed their lead out to seven points in the early moments of the second half, Thomas responded with seven straight points of their own to tie things, and the game remained tightly contested for much of the half. A late Terrier surge pushed the advantage to double figures, before Lyndon's closing run that eventually came up just short.
McIntyre led Lyndon with 24 points while Gonyea added 23 points to pace the Hornets offensively. Ty Bates (Hartwell, GA) and Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) pulled down eight and seven rebounds respectively.
Thomas was led by balanced scoring, as T.J. Blackmon and Isaiah Godley each scored 16 points, and Brady Adams added 14 points..
Lyndon will begin a five-game home stand on Friday evening when they host the State University of New York at Delhi at 5:30 pm.
