Rochester, NY - Several Vermont State University Lyndon men's tennis players were honored by the Empire 8 Athletic Conference when the conference announced its season awards on Monday. Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) was named to the East Division 1st Team in singles and he and David Gratton (Newport, VT) were named to the East Division 2nd Team in doubles. Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) was named to the East Division 2nd Team in singles, and Stephen Wutzl (Brookfield, CT) was named a Sportsman of the Year.
Blais, a senior, was Lyndon's first singles player this season. He was 3-2 in conference play, and 7-5 overall. This is his third consecutive All-Conference recognition, as he earned North Atlantic Conference honors as a junior and a sophomore. He finishes his Lyndon career with a 23-25 record.
Blais and Gratton, also a senior, teamed at first doubles nine times. They posted a 5-4 overall record, including a 2-2 mark in Empire 8 play. Blais and Gratton were also named to the NAC All-Conference team in 2024. The duo is 16-15 in 31 matches together over the past three seasons.
McIntyre, a sophomore, competed in intercollegiate tennis for the first time this spring. He posted a team best 9-3 overall record, 8-3 at third singles and 1-0 at second singles, including a 3-2 mark in conference play.
Wutzl, a senior, was Lyndon's representative to the Sportsman of the Year Team. One player from each school was named that institution's representative on the 2024-25 Men's Basketball Sportsman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 Conference emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. The honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportsmen. Wutzl was also named to the NAC's Sportsmanship Team in 2024.
Lyndon finished the season with a 7-5 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the Empire 8's East Division, landing them in fourth place. Wutzl is expected to graduate this weekend, while Blais and Gratton are expected to graduate in December. McIntyre will be counted on to anchor the 2026 Lyndon team.
