Hornet women fall to Husson on Senior Day

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - Husson University jumped out to an early 14-2 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 73-49 North Atlantic Conference victory over Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles remain unbeaten in 10 NAC contests and run their overall record to 14-4.  The Hornets fall to 7-9 on the season and 2-7 in NAC play.

Husson built their lead to as many as 15 points in the opening quarter following a three-pointer from Roxanne Sasse.  Lyndon's Ariez Pimentel (San Leandro, CA) answered with a three-pointer of her own to cut the Eagle lead back to 12 after one quarter.

With Husson leading, 28-17, at the 7:36 mark of the second quarter, the Eagles went on a 10-0 run over the Next five minutes to take control of the game.  The Eagles took a 19-point advantage into halftime.

The Hornets looked like they might climb back into the contest as the third quarter began.  Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) scored inside, then Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH) drained a three-pointer to cut the lead to 13.  After Husson built the advantage back to 17 following a pair of Vanessa Duarte free throws, Nyah Garner (Birmingham, AL) knocked down a three-pointer, then Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH) scored off of a feed from Porter to cut the margin back to 12.

Husson put any thoughts of a Hornet comeback to rest with a 10-0 run to push their lead back over 20 late in the third quarter.  The Eagles then extended the advantage to as many as 26 points in the final quarter before settling for the final margin.

Bailey Donovan had another dominant performance to lead Husson.  She finished with 19 points on 8 of 11 shooting and also pulled down 12 rebounds.  Duarte reached double figures with 10 points and Megan Peach matched Donovan with 12 rebounds.

Lyndon's two seniors, Poirier and Lea Crompton (Dunbarton, NH), paced the Hornets in their final home game.  Poirier led the way with 14 points and Crompton chipped in with 11.  Porter pulled down a team best 10 rebounds.

Husson made 30 of 63 field goal attempts (47.6%) and three of 11 (27.3%) from behind the three-point arc.  Lyndon struggled from the floor, only converting 18 of 60 attempts (30.0%) and six of 26 (23.1%) from distance.  The difference in the game was on the glass, as Husson held a commanding 56-24 rebounding advantage.

The Hornets will return to action on Monday evening when they travel to Lesley University for a non-conference contest.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
