Hornets fall behind early and never recover at Eastern Connecticut

Box Score

Willimantic, CT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's basketball team dug itself big hole in the first nine minutes of Sunday evening's men's basketball game at Eastern Connecticut State University and never recovered, as the host Warriors rolled to a 112-54 victory.  Eastern Connecticut evens their record at 2-2 on the season while the Hornets fall to 1-1.

After Eastern Connecticut's Cade Ensinger opened the scoring with a three-pointer on the game's first posession, Kenen Hajdarevic (St. Johnsbury, VT) answered with a layup off of a Luke Fredsell (Whitesboro, NY) pass to make it 3-2.  The Warriors would then go on a 19-2 run over the next eight minutes and take a 26-4 lead following a Cory Muckle jumper just under nine minutes into the game.

Eastern would grow their lead to 36-7 with 6:35 to go in the opening half, as the Hornets continued to be ice cold from the floor.  A 9-2 Hornet run capped by a Levi Haviland (Poultney, VT) three-pointer would get Lyndon back to within 22, but the Warriors woud grow their advantage back to 53-25 by halftime.

Lyndon would score the first six points of the second half to cut the Eastern lead back to 22, but back to back three-pointers by Eastern's Jaylin Palmer and Muckle would put an end to any hope of a Hornet rally.  Both teams then substituted liberally over the final 15 minutes as the hosts continued to pull away.

Rakesh Tibby topped six double figure scorers for Eastern, as he posted game highs of 18 points and ten rebounds.  Thomas Close added 14 points while Jalen Williams and Muckle each finished with 13 points.  Tyrese Harris (Wiesbaden, Germany) led Lyndon with 15 points.  Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY) was the only other Hornet in double figures as he chipped in ten points.

The Hornets are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday evening when they host Fisher College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm in Stannard Gymnasium.
