Hornet women's soccer plays Green Mountain to a 3-3 standoff

Box Score

Poultney, VT - The Lyndon State College women's soccer team earned its first point of the season, playing host Green Mountain College to a 3-3 double overtime tie on a very hot and humid September Tuesday afternoon.  The Hornets are now 0-6-1 on the season and 0-2-1 in North Atlantic Conference play, while the Eagles move to 4-2-1 and 1-1-1 in conference.

Green Mountain got on the scoreboard first in the 14th minute when Maya Golowasch (West Harrison, NY) beat Lyndon goalkeeper Johanna Sargent (Randolph, VT) after a partial breakaway.

The Hornets responded by scoring two late first half goals to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.  Senior Sarah Gerry (South Hero, VT) converted a pass from Michaela Columbia (Orleans, VT) in the 35th minute to even th score.  With just over a minute to go in the half, freshman Taylor Hollis (Corinth, VT) then pounced on a loose ball in the goal mouth aftern Green Mountain was unable to clear a Geary corner kick.

Green Mountain tied things up in the 58th minute when Jessica Bradley (Portland, OR) received a through ball from Sophya Fuccione (Lynn, MA) and put it past a diving Sargent.

Columbia gave the Hornets a 3-2 lead in the 82nd minute when she found the back of the net off of a Geary cross.  With Lyndon trying to hang on, Bradley struck again for Green Mountain, scoring the equalizer with less than two minutes remaining in regulation after an individual run.  Geary then had a great chance to win it for the Hornets, but her shot sailed wide with just 12 seconds remaining.

Hornet senior Rose Wilson (Marshfield, VT) had a chance to win it in the first overtime, but hit the post trying to put away a bebound of her own shot.

Sargent recorded 13 saves in goal for Lyndon while Green Mountain goalkeeper Jessica Casey (St. Albans, VT) made 12 saves.  Green Mountain held a slim 27-24 advantage in shots in what was a very evenly contested game.  Lyndon head coach Katy Ebner credited Wilson and senior Anna Gear (Fort Meyers, FL) with particularly strong performances in the contest.

The Hornets go on the road this weekend for a pair of games at Husson College and Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday and Sunday respectively.  Green Mountain will host New England College on Saturday.
