Paul Smith's, NY - The Vermont State University Lyndon women's soccer team opened their 2026 season with a non-conference match at Paul Smith's College this evening. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they were unable to get much offense going, and suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Bobcats. The game was Paul Smith's season opener as well.
For most of the first half the Hornets were sound on the back end, and kept the hosts off of the scoreboard. In the 33rd minute, however, Paul Smith's capitalized on a Lyndon giveaway, with Sydney Lemay firing a shot over Lyndon goalkeeper Aracely Delgado-Juarez (LaVelle, FL) to break the ice. The Bobcats took advantage of another Hornet misplay in the 43rd minute, with Kate Finnegan finding the back of the net to send the hosts into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
Paul Smith's extended their lead to 3-0 in the 51st minute when a pass deflected off of a Lyndon defender and Pailin Hample slid the ball past Delgado-Juarez. That would be all of the scoring, as the Hornet defense stood firm the rest of the contest.
Paul Smith's got the better of the play most of the game, outshooting the Hornets, 24-1. Freshman Kailee Dohrman (Buffalo, NY) recorded Lyndon's only shot in the early going.
Alanna Monroe and Finnegan split time in goal, recording a shutout without having to stop a shot. Delgado-Juarez made 12 saves in the Lyndon goal.
The Hornets will return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Vermont State University Randolph for a 4:00 pm kickoff. The venue was changed from Lyndon to Randolph and the Knights will make the return trip to Lyndon later in the season.
