Box Score LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Laura Drake collected seven kills, 13 assists, eight service aces and 10 digs to lead Lyndon to a 3-0 non-conference match victory over Green Mountain Saturday. With the win the Hornets improve to 4-7 on the season while the Eagles fall to 1-10.
Lyndon won the match by set scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-16.
"This effort was better than most we have had lately," said Head Coach Sean Fisher. "We did a better job of controlling the ball, but we still have a few things to clean up before the start of the conference season next weekend."
Joining Drake (Hinsdale, Mass.) in the spotlight was the play of Gwyneth Stahl, who had a team-high eight kills in the match to go along with four assists, four service aces, 11 digs and one block.
"Laura and Gwyneth played very well as our service was much better today," said Fisher. "We took some solid swings at the ball and did a good job of setting up offensively."
Kellie Murtagh (Merrimack, N.H.) chipped in six kills and five digs for the winners while teammate Joy Piper (Belmont, N.H.) added five kills and four blocks. Torie Cowell led Green Mountain with eight kills and Madison Wage had seven. Celeste Bowers handed out eight assists, Wage collected five service aces and Luz Guel had 10 digs.
Lyndon returns to the court Tuesday as they host Norwich at 8 p.m. After an exhibition game on the road at New Hampshire Technical Institute Thursday, the Hornets will open the 2014 North Atlantic Conference season Saturday at Johnson State with a tri-match against the host Badgers and a rematch with the Eagles.
"We beat Norwich for the first time in program history last year and I am hoping we can play them tough again this year," said Fisher. "I think if we can buckle down, pass the ball better and be a little more consistent in our service reception we'll be ready for the start of the conference season."
