Box Score LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Lyndon reeled off
four unanswered goals in the opening half of play to coast to
a 4-1 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in the quarterfinal round
of the North Atlantic Conference men's soccer playoffs.
Richie Munster gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead at the 13:29 mark
when he found the back of the net off a pass from Nate Tipton. The
lead stood for 10 minutes until the Hornets' Kyle Mecham
(Wilbraham, Mass.) headed home a cross from Emmitt Simpson (Barton,
Vt.) to tie the score at 1-1.
Lyndon took the lead for good seven minutes later when Patrice
Lumumba (Burlington, Vt./Republic of the Congo) took a through ball
from Teague Coyle (Northfield, N.H.) on the left side, eluded a
Maine Maritime defender and deposited a shot into the far corner of
the net beyond the reach of Mariner's goalkeeper Randy
Bartlett.
Phil Curll (Camden, Maine) upped the Hornet lead to 3-1 at 37:43
when he punched a corner kick off the foot of Tyler Bullard (Hyde
Park, Vt.). Hornet sweeper Matt Browne (Seymour, Conn.) closed out
the scoring in the contest with an unassisted tally from 15 meters
out with 3:04 left in the half.
Jason Gray (East Thetford, Vt.) made two saves for Lyndon to get
the win and Bartlett collected two saves as well. The Hornets
outshot Maine Maritime 16-7 in the game and had five corner kicks
to the Mariners' two.
Lyndon will now advance to the NAC Semifinals where it will face
top-seeded Castleton State. The contest will be held in Castleton
Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m.
