Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon men's soccer team came up on the short end of a 5-1 result when they hosted Plymouth State University on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers improved to 3-2 with the win, while the Hornets fell to 0-3-1.
Plymouth State struck early when Christian Torres bent a corner kick into the net to put the Panthers in front less than five minutes in. In the 15th minute, another Panther corner deflected off of a Lyndon defender's head for an own goal, making the score 2-0. Plymouth scored again in the 18th minute, when Torres forced a turnover in front of the Lyndon goal and fired a shot past Hornet goalkeeper Joe Buchanan (McCordsville, IN). That score would stand heading into halftime.
Plymouth scored again shortly after intermission. In the 48th minute, Caleb Charnley slipped a pass to Torres well outside the box and Torres slipped the ball through traffic and past Buchanan. Lyndon got on the board in the 69th minute when Fisher Lajoie (Anchorage, AK) stepped in front of a Plymouth throw in and bent a beautiful shot over the top of Panther keeper Yahir Tinajero and into the upper right corner of the net. Plymouth's George Bergin picked up an unassisted goal in the final minute to account for the final score.
Plymouth outshot Lyndon, 23-7. Both teams earned five corner kicks. Plymouth starting keeper made two saves in the first half, while Tinajero stopped one in the second stanza. Buchanan stopped three Plymouth shots before giving way to Parker Pierce (Woodstock, VT) in the 66th minute.
Lyndon will open North Atlantic Conference play this Saturday when they travel to Thomas College for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
