Vermont State University Lyndon

Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon women's soccer team battled the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field, but the Owls scored twice in the second half to come away with a 2-1 North Atlantic Conference victory.

The Hornets and Owls played through a scoreless opening 45 minutes.  Lyndon created several early opportunities, with Victoria Fitih (Madison, TN) sending a shot wide in the second minute and Kailee Dohrman (Buffalo, NY) testing UMPI goalkeeper Michaela Carney in the 11th minute.

UMPI generated increasing pressure as the half progressed, but Lyndon goalkeeper Aracely Delgado-Juarez (LaBelle, FL) kept the Owls off the scoreboard.  Delgado-Juarez made four first-half saves, including three stops during a five-minute stretch midway through the period.

Lyndon continued to look for the breakthrough early in the second half, but UMPI struck first in the 49th minute when Kamryn Clavette capitalized on a Hornet giveaway and scored to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

Dohrman continued to provide an offensive spark for the Hornets, forcing another save in the 56th minute and again in the 74th minute.  Delgado-Juarez kept Lyndon within one with several more saves as the Owls continued to generate opportunities.

UMPI doubled its advantage in the 79th minute when Ella McCarthy scored off a corner from Abby Doughty.

Lyndon got on the board just over five minutes later.  Wahaila Granillo (Albuquerque, NM) converted a free kick from about 35 yards out  in the 85th minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and giving the Hornets an opportunity to equalize in the closing minutes.

Delgado-Juarez made two more saves in the final minutes, but UMPI held on for the victory.

Delgado-Juarez finished with 11 saves for Lyndon, whole Owl keeper Michaela Carney stopped three Hornet shots.  Dohrman led the Hornets with four shots, including three on goal, while Fitih added two shots.  Lyndon finished with seven shots, four on goal, while UMPI held a 23-7 advantage in shots and a 13-4 edge in shots on goal.  The Owls also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The loss drops Lyndon to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in NAC play, while UMPI improves to 1-5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action.

The Hornets will remain at home Sunday, September 27, when they host the State University of New York at Canton in a 1 p.m. non-conference matchup at Varsity Field.
