Lyndonville, VT — The State University of New York at Canton scored once in each half to defeat Vermont State University Lyndon, 2-0, in non-conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon on a rainy and wet Varsity Field.
The Hornets kept the game within reach through much of the first half, with goalkeeper Ella Renaud (Hardwick, VT) making several saves to keep Canton off the scoreboard. Lyndon also generated an early scoring opportunity when Wahaila Granillo (Albuquerque, NM) put a shot on goal in the 20th minute, but Canton's Nicole Morrow made the save. Renaud finished the match with 12 saves.
Canton broke through in the 42nd minute when Marley Sharkey scored off an assist from Hailey Hassos to give the Roos a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Sharkey added her second goal of the match in the 67th minute, with Hassos and Reese Durant assisting on the play.
Lyndon was held to two shots, including Granillo's shot on goal. Kailee Dohrman (Buffalo, NY) attempted Lyndon's other shot. Canton finished with 32 shots, including 14 on target, and held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hornets fell to 1-5 on the season, while Canton improved to 1-6-2. Lyndon returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Vermont State University Randolph at 4 p.m. on Varsity Field.
