Lyndonville, VT — The Vermont State University Lyndon men's basketball team played Maine Maritime Academy to a deadlock at halftime, but was unable to cool off the hot shooting Mariners after intermission, falling 94-72 at George W. Stannard Gymnasium. The Hornets fell to 7-14 overall and 5-9 in North Atlantic Conference play, while the Mariners improved to 10-13 overall and 10-6 in conference action.
With the game deadlocked at 42-42 at halftime, Maine Maritime took control after the break, riding red hot shooting to pull away for the conference win. The Mariners were 34/56 (60.7%) from the floor and a blistering 17/27 (63.0%) from behind the three-point line, including 8/12 from distance after intermission. The Hornets kept pace in the first half, but cooled off significantly in the second stanza, only shooting 10/28 (35.7%) overall and 2/13 (15.4%) from three in the second half. For the game Lyndon was 27/58 (46.6%) overall and 6/22 (27.3%) from distance.
Drew Hamilton led all scorers for Maine Maritime with 31 points, knocking down seven three-pointers on 10 attempts. Aaron Pensel added 14 points for the Mariners, while Jack Banks and Marcus Schade each finished with 11 points to round out a balanced scoring effort.
Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) paced the Hornets with a strong all-around performance, finishing with a career high 31 points and nine rebounds. Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) was the only other Lyndon player to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points.
Lyndon returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they host NAC leading University of Maine at Farmington. Tip-off is at 1:00 pm in Stannard Gymnasium.
